It has been an interesting August, with many different experiences and moments shared with loved ones and family. In my endeavour to better understand my past, I took the opportunity to explore family systems and constellations in the remix of spending time with my direct family. This process allowed me to have a more experiential flavour of working with unresolved family issues that can lead to generational trauma and to get to understand the potential projected roles set on me by my lineage before I was even born.

It has been fascinating to have the opportunity to refer to the beautiful and well-written book by Mark Wolynn, ‘It didn’t start with you’, while exploring family dynamics and my relationship and rapport with my progenitors. In my therapeutic curiosity, I made sense of many of the practical exercises he proposed in the book with the experiences and knowledge I had from my family. But the fact of being with my parents and sister allowed me to keep enquiring, asking questions, and exploring my own personal beliefs over the years in relation to family members from previous generations. It was really fascinating to remember and discover information that I had somehow neglected, which brought some light into some of my life choices and potential trails in my personality.

I always believe that in order to support another in their journey, you will need to know the route or at least have a vague vision of the direction. I practice by example, and I air my ‘dirty laundry’, AKA shadow, on every occasion possible, not because I have some addiction to it or ulterior motive, but because it is part of our development, it is the right and responsible thing to do. So, with this said, I will keep getting into the hidden corners of my family history—more in another blog.
